bottled-beetle:

Green eyes shouldn’t actually be considered an eye color. It’s just not common enough, it’s a VERY SMALL percentage of the population, 1-2%. Green eyes are also caused by an irregular mutation. Most people have blue or brown eyes, so those are the two eye colors.

All the “green eyes” positivity is actually a bad thing, by the way. Having green eyes is linked to higher rates of retinal melanoma. You’re celebrating something dangerous that can cause suffering.

And besides, most people with “green eyes” lean closer to blue or brown anyways. They should just make up their minds and be brown eyed or green eyed. And if it’s too hard to tell, they should get corrective surgery (because green eyes are dangerous, and associated with more difficult medical care!) or at the least wear contacts so they don’t confuse people. But also they should be required to

I hate to sound like this, but green eyes are a far more recent development than blue eyes in the mutagenic history of humans. So humans weren’t created to have green eyes.

And hazel eyes? Those are just a variant of brown eyes—come on, they’re far closer to brown than green. They just have a couple greenish traits. And there’s no way there’s that many green eyed people, or a wide variety of eye colors… It’s just not natural.

I don’t have a problem with green eyed people, they didn’t ask to be born that way—but there’s just too few of them for it to be an actual eye color. We don’t need all this “green eye positivity” or putting green eyes in media. The internet is making people delude themselves into thinking it’s more common than it really is.

I feel so… down whenever I want to watch queer or trans videos because I know in the back of my mind that none of the current large queer content creators’ content or community is safe for people like me, intersex people.

I love their work otherwise, but it hurts badly to hear them toss around casual intersexism in their videos constantly when discussing queer and trans issues and nobody ever mentions it.

And because these are large, popular creators, nobody has ever listened when I’ve tried to ask they adjust their language. My dms go ignored or unseen and my public comments get drowned out by fans defending their intersexist comments. It’s emotionally draining and exhausting, I just want to be included in my own community.

Genuinely asking if you are comfortable sharing, but what are some examples of “casual intersexism”? I’m honestly less read up on it than I should as someone who is intersex. Feel free to ignore this though should you not feel like it or anything.

  • Stripping our intersex status when it fits an argument, ex. “Cis kids get put on hormones no problem while trans kids are denied them” (While they ignore that these are intersex children forced onto hormones)
  • Using us when it does fit an argument, but ignoring us entirely outside of that context, ex. Using intersex people existing to validate trans people existing, but never doing any sort of intersex advocacy unless it directly benefits/includes trans people as well
  • Erasing intersex issues while attempting to argue trans rights, ex. “No child is getting forced sex changes, that’s not a thing that happens” (It doesn’t happen to trans people, but happens all the time to intersex people)
  • Saying that sex is binary but gender isn’t (Neither of them are binary)
  • Reducing intersex people down to cis people with disorders, ex. “Cis people without uteruses” or “Cis people with gynecomastia”
  • In addition to the above point, generally acting as if intersex people are not oppressed or as though we have it better than trans people do, often by calling us cis and disordered rather than intersex, ex. “Cis women with high testosterone levels are allowed in sports but trans people aren’t” (Which is not even really a true statement) or by wishing that they were intersex or openly admitting to calling themselves intersex in their personal life in an attempt to avoid discrimination
  • Casual use of the word “Hermaphrodite”
  • Calling intersex animals trans/nonbinary
  • Ignoring blatant intersexism, never calling it out
  • Calling bills/laws or other issues which directly impact intersex people “trans bills” instead of “trans and intersex bills”, such as the recent Kansas bill directly targeting intersex people being called a “trans bill” - making these bills aiming to exterminate intersex people solely about trans people and ignoring the bills’ direct attack on intersex people
  • When these issues are brought up, saying that intersex people are “just caught in the crossfire/unfortunately affected by mistake but not intentionally, it’s about trans people not intersex people”
  • Saying that intersex people are not LGBT/queer (Not all intersex people identify as queer, but we have always been part of queer community and should not be pushed out)
  • Reducing intersex people down to a statistic
  • Common misinformation, such as saying that being intersex means “being born with both parts”
  • Using afab and amab as equal to “perisex female” and “perisex male”, ex. Talking as if all afabs are born with the same hormonal, genetic, or reproductive profiles

Thank you for detailing these examples. I hadn’t realized these things were intersexist. I will do my best to be a better ally and call out these points in the future.

psa for cane, crutch, and wheelchair users getting top surgery:

you will not be able to exert much effort with your arms. self supporting with a cane or crutch or self propelling in your wheelchair is inadvisable.

make sure you have a support person to help you, or be prepared to be using your legs more if you are able.

just adding on as a cane/crutch user who had top surgery:

however long your doctor recommends you not use your arms in this way, try to go a couple more days just in case. i know it’s really hard if you need mobility aids like i do, but the reason i use them is because of chronic pain, and unfortunately post-surgery will be painful for a bit once you’re off the prescription stuff and back to OTC and using the aids will make it hurt more for longer. it also makes the healing of scar tissue potentially be weird (i had a double mastectomy idk if this is true about peri) and especially if you get drains for a few days, the healing process will be harder.

obviously this will not be feasible for everyone, be that because of financial needs regarding getting back to work or lack of support for that much care for that long, but if possible, it’s what i recommend.

also your mileage may vary! i was physically allowed to be back at school in 2 weeks with help from my friends and teachers (which i’m very thankful for) but the healing process takes time for the scar tissue to form and settle, and like, you gotta see if you nipples, should you choose to reattach them, will stay on and form nerve endings again so just be prepared.

top surgery saved my life and i just want everyone who wants it to know what to expect so that it’s as easy as possible because the feeling of looking at my flat chest for the first time is a high i’ve never been able to find again

starting HRT doesn’t have to be a huge momentous all-or-nothing decision. you can just try it like you would an antidepressant you’ve been informed of the risks of.

there won’t be any immediate irreversible changes overnight. you can always stop, change your dose, change your delivery system, decide it’s not the right time. you can even microdose if you want to.

you don’t have to tell anyone. you don’t have to announce it if you don’t want to.

stop waiting for a perfect time in your life because it won’t come.

stop waiting to reach a mythical level of certainty that never comes to anyone, for anything.

you’ve been thinking about it long enough. if you have the opportunity, just give it a shot. you’re worth the courage it takes to make a change in your life.

IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR NEWLY OUT TRANS GIRLS

  • If anybody tries to isolate you, cut you off from other friends, or convince you that they are the only person you can trust or who can be capable of loving you, run extremely far away in the other direction
  • While transition is a process that takes place over time, it is so important that you love yourself for who you are in the present. You are lovable now; there’s only harm in believing otherwise or deferring your happiness until you feel like you’ve “earned” it
  • You can perform a double jump to reach high places by pressing the jump button while in the air

contrary to popular belief not everyone has an innate sense of internal gender or care to have one or seek a name for it, some people go their whole lives without questioning their occupation in one of two gender roles, but for some people, if pressed, they don’t feel that internal sense of ‘i am a woman’ or ‘i am a man’, and in that case i feel the switch over to transgender vs cisgender relies on active identification of a gender other than the one they were assigned. if someone’s like ‘idk dude I just work here’ then that’s valid

#i would describe my gender as not exactly ‘idk dude i just work here’ #more like…..when someone assumes you work somewhere that you don’t #but you know how to help them so you do it anyway #my gender is wearing a red shirt at a target

These are the best tags

A portion of people in the notes are like ‘but that makes you trans. That’s called being agender’ and another portion of people are going ‘this is how the majority of cis ppl feel and it’s NOT agender’ and personally I feel like both of them are missing the point here. Yes a lot of people identify as agender because of this feeling. Yes a lot of people with this same feeling still identify as cis. These are not mutually exclusive experiences and it doesn’t mean the agender people are secretly cis or the cis people are secretly agender. It just means they have very similar experiences of gender that they choose to conceptualize and label differently, and neither of them are mistaken or wrong to do so.

i forget who made the post but “if you would transition in a heartbeat in a more accepting society then you are in fact trans” really helps me when i need it

Btw, this is true even if you decide that, due to not being in an accepting society, you are never going to transition. If that’s you, I’m sorry that that’s your situation, and I hope that someday you are in a safer environment so that you can live the life that you want to live. But even if you can never show it, even if you have to remain closeted for your entire life… you’re still part of the trans community, and you can still call yourself trans in places where it is safe for you to do so, and you still belong in online trans spaces.

hello transgender woman on reddit. before you is a transfem who is pre-everything asking about how to get a close shave on facial hair. if you reply “just get laser hair removal” a bomb will go off killing you instantly

safety razor and shaving butter is the way to go, in my experience!

razors with multiple blades tug and irritate my skin more often, and don’t cut nearly as closely. and shaving cream is inconsistent with its actual viscosity and overall quality for the shave.

i keep a bit of shaving butter in my left hand at all times, and i keep my right hand for my razor, that way i dont make the handle all slippy.

also, since most safety razors have two sides, i recommend using one side for each half of your face! it spreads out the wear more evenly, making it easier to reuse them. i reuse blades for 2-3 shaves. i could probably reuse them for one or two more shaves, but i prefer not to take a chance.

to dispose of blades, i get a piece of packing tape to fold it into. the only way anyone’s gonna get hurt by that is if they go out of their way to pry open the tape to get to the dangerous object.

the total cost of this was about $100 for the safety razor (this is the one i use), butter, and 100 blades, which i paid over a year ago. since then i havent spent a penny on shaving, and i foresee myself not needing to for a while longer. maybe on shaving butter, but that’s it.

for actual shaving technique, i give my face 3 passes. once while going with the grain (the direction your hair is growing in), once taking the grain from the side, and once going against the grain. that usually leaves me smooth for a day and a half. with a bit of foundation, you can cover up the next day’s stubble relatively easily.

shaving every day is bad for you, so i try to leave at least 2 days for the microcuts on my face from the razor to heal between shaves, and i recommend doing the same.

A couple of years ago I was tidying a rarely-tidied storage space, and found this painting that I bought long pre-transition (and then hid away, and eventually forgot about), because I had been captivated by the beauty of it, and wished dearly that it could be me, and settled for “in another life”, and now, it’s basically me (if I put my hair up):

“The trannies should be able to piss in whatever toilet they want and change their bodies however they want. Why is it my business if some chick has a dick or a guy has a pie? I’m not a trannie or a fag so I don’t care, just give ‘em the medicine they need.”

“This is an LGBT safe space. Of COURSE I fully support individuals who identify as transgender and their right to self-determination! I just think that transitioning is a very serious choice and should be heavily regulated. And there could be a lot of harm in exposing cis children to such topics, so we should be really careful about when it is appropriate to mention trans issues or have too much trans visibility.”

One of the above statements is Problematic and the other is slightly annoying. If we disagree on which is which then working together for a better future is going to get really fucking difficult.

Someone who says they don’t care if dudes wear dresses and makeup is a better ally than someone who says they’re a safe space for women and non-binary people. I am not joking.

yeah I went to a gay bar recently with my husband tumblr user beemovieerotica, and a VERY confused capital S Southerner straight man in cargo shorts and a trucker hat showed up

apparently he (who through my drunken memory I remember only as Earl) liked some woman, and she told him that he wasn’t cultured enough and needed to attend his first drag show (she also flaked on him)

Now I’m reasonably androgynous and was wearing makeup, a short leather skirt, and black heeled boots, but still when this guy came up to me when I was standing off alone and asked “So. Do you come here often?” with a very earnest expression, I thought. Surely not. This guy doesn’t think I’m a straight woman does he????

Anyway I start talking with this guy and he has no idea what the fuck is going on but he is just a very kind and earnest dude and asked a lot of questions (while asking if it was alright if he asked those questions). I track down my husband and friends and I’m like y'all. We need to make sure that Earl has a Good Fucking Time tonight.

Man was completely out of his depth. At one point they put on a puppy auction to raise money for Pride, that started with a 6 ft drag queen in all her glory leading a leather pup out on a leash to the tune of that damned RSPCA “in the arms of the angels” song

We look at Earl. Nervous. He squints, laughs, and then goes “I was wondering why people were dressed like that!” He turned to me and asked “So they’re like dogs?” And I said yeah pretty much. And he just chuckled and went “Yeah I thought so with the tails! Never seen this before!”

When the first drag king came out, Earl looked at me wide eyed and went “There’s a dude version too?!” And I said yeah they’re called drag kings. And he said, low, “Drag kings.”

During one of the queens performances, he frowned, shook his head and told me, “Your legs are better than hers.” in a tone that implied he thought there was some travesty taking place and I should also be getting paid

When he found out I was there with my husband (and that I am not a woman) he profusely apologized and said “I’m so sorry, it’s dark in here and I thought you were a hot chick! I wouldn’t have said nothing if I knew you had a husband, I’m so sorry about that.”

When beemovie invited me to the dance floor with him later and I still had a drink in my hand, Earl said “Oh don’t worry about that I can hold your drink, you get on out there and shake your ass with your husband!” Then before we left, Earl bought me drinks for “Putting up with me all night and answering everything. Y'all helped me have a great time tonight.”

like. You gotta recognize there’s going to people who have never had interacted outside of their of their own community. This includes you. And just because your community is familiar with all the right vocabulary and how to correctly say something, it doesn’t mean they’re actually going to support you. If someone like Earl shows up, confused and out of their depth but kind and curious and earnest, you gotta have patience and truck through the small things, so when he goes back to his friends and his coworkers and they snicker asking how the drag show was, he can genuinely talk about how included we tried to make him feel and that he had a great time

The person matters more than the language

Taking my hot pink girlie testosterone to stay sexy and functional as a woman and a dyke! Fuck your intersexist bioessentialism!

I had to fight for this, hard. I’m intersex and was forced onto estrogen as a teen and it made me really sick. In my late 20s, I had a doctor convince me that estrogen was medically necessary for me - it wasn’t - and put me back on it, making me ill for years.

In 2022, a nonbinary doctor denied me a referral to a gender affirming endocrinologist because I’m intersex and wasn’t intending on changing my gender to man or nonbinary - because I wasn’t transitioning. I was sent to a random endocrinologist that spent an hour trying to convince me I must be a man to be okay with my body, and that microdoses of testosterone for postmenopausal women isn’t a thing. (It fucking is.)

part of being an ally to trans men is not being a dick to cis men for their appearance btw

the short trans men hear you. the trans men with bottom growth—or who are post-phalloplasty—hear your bad jokes about small dicks. the trans men undergoing hrt who are losing their hair hear you talk shit about bald spots.

also, hot take, you should care about not hurting random cis men in addition to not hurting trans men. like just because some guy is being an asshole online doesn’t mean the thousands of young boys reading your comments about someone with their same acne deserved it. i don’t care what your reason is, even if you think someone is bad enough to warrant being bullied, who gave you permission to hurt the innocent bystander?
